Eric Tinkler, the coach of Cape Town City, expressed disappointment that his team did not have more control over the game on Saturday afternoon against Kaizer Chiefs.
Even since the league resumed in mid-February, the Citizens have yet to secure a victory, and they have occasionally kept the Amakhosi at a distance at a packed Athlone Stadium.
Regarding the performance as a whole, Tinkler feels he received the response he was hoping for after their recent poor performance.
“As I already stated to you, I expected a better response from the squad; I wanted more vigor, drive, and emotion, and I believe I saw it in the first half. You know, the mental adjustments were crucial, particularly in light of the games we played in which we didn’t achieve the expected outcomes, Tinkler said to SuperSport TV.
“I thought our performance in the first half was excellent, you know. I believed we had them cornered. In the first half, we had the better opportunities; they only really tried to damage us when we gave the ball away poorly and went on the counterattack.
Apart from that, we handled them during the build-up and during open play. Thus, it’s only in the latter third; they didn’t harm us. When we had the chance to punish them, we chose not to do so.
We discussed mending those areas during the interval, and during the first fifteen minutes of the second half, we were there. I believe we got tired of the game as it went on.
They began to play much more aggressively, and as I mentioned before, they created counterattack possibilities, balls in play, and a strong second half showing, particularly in the final 20 minutes. We needed to exert more control over the game than we did, but we failed to do so.
“We conceded the ball too soon, too cheaply, and too quickly, and we were caught on the counter, which was always going to be a threat,” he continued.
