Werner De Jager, a Murder Suspect, Passes Away Due to “Medical Complications.”

Werner de Jager, who was charged with murder, passed away on Monday, according to the Department of Correctional Services.

De Jager was on trial for the October 2021 murder of his wife, Amanzimtoti pastor Liezel de Jager.

According to Thulani Mdluli, a spokesman for the KZN Department of Correctional Services, “The Department of Correctional Services can confirm the death of detainee Werner de Jager, who was admitted to King Edward Hospital on 5 April 2024 following medical complications.”

“DCS was duly informed that the detainee passed away at the hospital on April 15, 2024.”

The family of De Werner de Jager is experiencing conflicting feelings following his death, according to civil society organization Action Society, which pushed for the National Cold Case Unit to take over the probe.

Speaking on behalf of Action Society, Juanita du Preez said, “Our hearts go out to Liezel’s little daughters who have now lost both parents, and we pray for strength for her parents, Henk and Salomé, who are their guardians since Liezel’s death.”

“We’ll keep fighting for Liezel’s justice. Liezel deserves the answers and justice she seeks, and we owe it to her daughters, family, and friends to see this matter through to the finish, according to du Preez.

De Jager was supposed to return to court on May 10.
