Western Cape Police Officer Appears in Court After Being Accused of Raping a Detainee

A police officer who was accused of sexually assaulting a woman while she was in custody has made an appearance at the West Coast Citrusdal Magistrate’s court.

Last week, the officer was taken into custody. The officer will stay in detention, according to NPA spokesman Eric Ntabazalila, and the application for bail has been postponed.

The state attests that on March 12, 2024, the bail application of a Citrusdal police officer who is accused of raping a detainee would proceed. The parties could not agree on a schedule, thus the matter was postponed until today. According to the state, the offense falls under schedule 6, meaning that the burden of proof is with the accused to demonstrate that posting bail would further the interests of justice. In contrast, the defense contends that it is schedule 5.
