What Number of Points Does Sundowns Need to Win the League?

Mamelodi-Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns is poised to win the league for the seventh time in a row. Here are the remaining “mathematically” winning candidates and the number of points the Brazilians need to win it.

Bafana Ba Style, as Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro recently dubbed them, are once again unbeatable in the league this season. They are a “points machine.”

They have won 16 and drawn five of the 21 games they have played so far in the DStv Premiership, without dropping a single game.

They would become the first PSL team to go the entire league season winless if they manage to stay unbeatable in the following nine league games. However, it appears that exhaustion has set in as they have been struggling to produce the kind of convincing wins they typically accomplish.

Even though the Tshwane giants dominate games when they have the ball, their recent opponents’ low blocks make things difficult for them.

In a game on Monday night at Dobsonville Stadium against the Moroka Swallows, the league champions blew a 2-0 lead. Bafana Ba Style led by goals from Marcelo Allende and Teboho Mokoena, both of whom scored outside the box.

But a late goal from Gabadinho Mhango and an easy tap-in from Augustine Mahlonoko handed Rulani Mokwena’s team a point against the Dube Birds.

What Has to Happen for Sundowns to Win the League? Who Else Has a Chance to Win It “Mathematically”?

Currently, Masandawana is the only one who can score 64 points. They currently have 53 points, which means that unless Stellenbosch FC and a few other teams in the chase drop points, they will need 11 points from their final nine games to win the championship.

The teams who can still “mathematically” win the league are Stellies, Orlando Pirates, Sekhukhune United, TS Galaxy, SuperSport United, and Cape Town City.

Even if Sundowns wins all of their remaining games, Kaizer Chiefs and the other clubs are eliminated since they are unable to equal Sundowns’ total of 53 points.
