A basic agreement has been reached by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Morocco during the months of July and August.
When asked when the next tournament will take place, Patrice Motsepe, the president of CAF, has given no clear indication.
FROM 2025, THE AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS WILL OCCUPY THE TRADITIONAL OFF-SEASON WINDOW
Afcon, which has been at the center of disputes between players and their national teams due to certain clubs’ unwillingness to let players go in January, may end up benefiting greatly from the current situation.
Caf discovered they were having greater problems because the competition was scheduled for 2024. If it were to take place in June and July of 2024, it would clash with FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup, which is slated to take place in North America.
AFCON CONSENSUS ABOUT MOROCCO 2025
According to a competitions committee member who spoke to AFP this week on the condition of anonymity, there is “an agreement in principle between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation for the AFCON to be held during the summer, more precisely in July and August” of 2025.
The insider continued, “After discussions that started several months ago and grew more intense during the last edition, which finished this month in Ivory Coast, this agreement was reached with the support of FIFA.”
The dates that are currently being suggested are July 20–August 16–17, 2025.
FROM PILLAR TO POST, PUSHED
The most recent two Africa Cup of Nations dates were moved. The 2022 competition, which was hosted by Cameroon, took place in January and February of that year. The most recent event, which was scheduled for June and July of last year, was postponed because of weather concerns.
Next month is when the Afcon qualifying round is expected to begin.
Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda will alternate hosting the 2027 Cup of Nations.
