Why Da Gama Declined Invitations to Rejoin the PSL

Owen Da Gama

Owen Da Gama, a former Orlando Pirates coach, has given an explanation for why he was forced to decline invitations to rejoin the PSL at the beginning of the 2023–2024 season.

After parting company with Black Leopards, a team competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, last season, Da Gama has been without a club.

Although there has been a constant turnover of coaches in the first division and the DStv Premiership, the 62-year-old is still single.

He claims to FARPost that he was given the chance to get back into the elite league, but he didn’t agree with some of the teams’ plans for him.

Why Owen Da Gama Was Not Persuaded to Return to the Dugout by Some Psl Offers

“At the start of the season, I spoke with a few teams, but after I got their perspective, I just felt this is not the project I want to be a part of,” Da Gama said to FARPost.

“I’m not a vacuous person. But I do think that, even if football is a process, changes are possible. All of the clubs that I met with at the start of the season are having trouble. I was aware that I could never be a part of that.

“There are, therefore, excellent teams in the PSL and NFD that are well managed. Of course, I’m excited to be a member of an established team.

A Three-time Awardee Improving His Coaching Skills

Da Gama further disclosed that, as he waits for the ideal opportunity, he has been improving his coaching expertise.

“I am a member of the Spanish Football Institute and I watch a lot of football,” he remarked. “I have taken a few of their courses in order to stay current.

As you are aware, Spain has dominated football since 2010, and they have established a style that people are attempting to follow today. Pep Guardiola was the first coach to start playing from the back, as you have seen. They’ve started a trend now.

I simply wanted to learn and improve myself. Since you can never be too old or too young to learn, I’ve been making an effort to stay current and advance in the game.
