Why Rihanna Didn’t Attend the 2024 Met Gala

At the Costume Institute’s annual celebration, fashionistas are no strangers to the feeling of excitedly awaiting Rihanna’s entrance, and the Met Gala 2024 was no exception. Until the end of all that waiting for a no-show. It would seem that last-minute diseases affect even celebrities.

The singer, who was born in Barbados, has become a Met must-see in recent years. She always embraces the theme of the event, whether it’s by dressing like a glitzy Pope or, as she did last year, by enveloping herself in an enormous cream floral masterpiece. In 2023, a pregnant Rihanna and her partner A$AP Rocky arrived to close off the carpet at the lively hour of 10 p.m. Her arrival times have been getting later and later. The celebrity foreshadowed a “really simple” appearance and an on-time schedule this year in an interview with Extra conducted weeks before the event, declaring, “I’m showing up for dinner!”

She did not come for supper, reader. She never made an appearance. The world was still waiting to see when Rihanna would arrive despite Cardi B’s best efforts to fill in Rihanna’s customary carpet-closing spot. She unveiled a black Windowsen gown with a skirt so voluminous that science would only describe it as “ginormous,” and co-chair Zendaya gave a last-minute second look, completely abandoning her outfit and glam for a one-woman double act.

An unidentified insider who talked to People claims that the Met mainstay was forced to stay at home on Monday due to a case of the flu.

Riot, who turns two on May 13, and RZA, who turns one on May 13, are Rihanna and Rocky’s two young children.

Vanity Fair reached out to Rihanna for comment, but she hasn’t replied.
