The blood bank is pleading for donors in a desperate attempt to prevent a crisis in the nation’s healthcare system.
According to Sfiso Khoza of the SANBS, patient care is already being impacted by the current scarcity.
The idea that donations are only required over the holidays is false, according to Khoza.
He notes that in order to match the daily demand, they require coverage for at least five days.
There is a possibility of some people losing their lives if there is insufficient blood to treat cancer patients, expectant women, and premature babies. Actually, we require 3500 units of blood annually, but we never manage to meet this need. Up to three lives can be saved by one unit of blood.
Our permanent donation locations are open eight a.m. to four p.m., Monday through Saturday.”
